Ghostbusters (2016)

The new Ghostbusters movie is a reimagining of the original 1984 title that featured Dan Aykroyd (Ray Stantz), Bill Murray (Peter Venkman), Harold Ramis (Dr. Egon Spengler) and Ernie Hudson (Winston Zeddemore). The problem was that instead of men the new cast is composed of women. *Gasp* Backlash aside, people thought that the movie had to be a flop because female leads can’t carry the weight of a comedy of this magnitude. Sadly, the men sharing memes insisting that other male comedians and actors could do a better job haven’t realized how they are perpetuating misogyny. Surely the outrage was justified cause after all there is no proof women are better at stuff than men when the opposite is true and heavily documented. (SMH)

Melissa McCarthy (Abby Yates), Kirsten Wiig (Erin Gilbert), Kate McKinnon (Jillian Hotlzmann) and Leslie Jones (Patty Tolan) do a fabulous job bringing the franchise’s lore to life. Chris Hemsworth kills it as Kevin, the quintessential blonde beauty that is dumb as a rock but has a heart of gold. True to the original story, the plot revolves around the discovery of the supernatural and the methods to capture proof of its existence. By the end of the film you become an expert in the paranormal and you fall in love with the characters. The cameos alone will floor the self professed hardcore fans. The leap in technology and graphics alone justify the need to reboot the Ghostbusters. It may not be the movie we want but it was the movie we deserved.

The best part is that this time around women were front and center, a trend started in the late 70s and 80s, and got a chance to shine and carry a sci fi flick without the need of an equally strong and box office hit actor. Their comedic and acting chops made the movie a success. I loved and enjoyed this moment because I finally have a movie to show the future generations of girls that showcase beautiful, strong and intelligent women following their passion for knowledge and the truth. Scientists and engineers have a new face now, and a sense of humor too!

Please give this movie a chance. You won’t regret it.
