As an independent entity that can analyze, process and think without being spoonfed the answer, I get frustrated at my peers for not challenging the hegemony and rebel. The unspoken truth is that Millennials were brainwashed to conform, to trust their parents blindly. Many of us inhetit our political views from our parentals and if this election is any indication, the bigotry and prejudice too. Boomers are power hungry, even at their retirement age, and will do anything it takes to undermine the efforts of the Millennials they worked so hard to control.
Look at the current state of affairs and you will notice that the discourse to discredit Gen Y is an attempt to shine the spotlight away from the real issues. The Bernie Sanders vs Clinton debacle. Trump parading his Millennial children as trophies to show that if his smart kids can support him yours can too without thinking twice about the bigotry and racial and gender bias discourse he has been spewing. Hard to believe that the privilege of being part of the good old white boys club is still honored. This needs to stop now.
Millennials, I was exposed during my developmental and adolescent years to the realities of war and worldwide political conflict even before 9/11 happened. Safety is an illusion. Don’t let yourself be charmed daily by the instant celebrity that reality TV, Youtube and Twitter offer. Don’t forget that the war machine is profiteering and running smoothly while you drink your Pumpkin Spice Latte. While other countries innovate and educate out of necessity, our children play with iPads and smartphones full of parental controls so they don’t stumble upon the truth and dangers of life. They walk oblivious to those very same experiences that made the generations before them strong and fierce. Free them from ignorance. Protect their innocence by letting them participate of this process, providing them information to combat the same evils we are trying to protect them from. Only they can end bullying, discrimination and violence. Understanding is key.
Now that we have come of age it is our turn to take over the institutions and reform, creating our own traditions and social rules. It is up to the ones fully awake to convince and reprogram those who have been enslaved by their authority figures that there is a better future ahead, that there is no need to make anything great again. Lets not play the game that our voices don’t matter. We have finally surpassed the Boomers in numbers, more so when paired with the Gen Xers. It is time we stepped up and governed. We were born to rule not to follow blindly like sheep. We are the future, our time is now! Come November 8, we need all the help we can get. Women’s reproductive rights, wage equality, Gay rights, Legalization of Marijuana, #BlackLivesMatter and civil rights legislation, School funding, taxes, Education…they need your support.
Go vote. Rise!
