Suicide Squad: Not as Horrible as Marvel Fans Make it to Be

Many people hated the theatrical release of the Suicide Squad because it didn’t fill a need or void they were hoping to meet. True to form, DC delivered the anti Avenger anti-Marvel, think before you comment movie for the comic book super geek. Laypeople will not enjoy this movie unless they do some research first. Although the character introductions helped with some of the plot holes that would have otherwise surfaced, you need to know your DC history to understand where the director and cast were coming from.

Deadshot (Will Smith), Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), Captain Boomerang (Jay Courtney), El Diablo (Jay Hernandez), Killer Croc and Captain Flag (Joel Kinnaman) are teamed up by Amanda Waller (Viola Davis) to create an elite squad of killer badassess that could neutralize any supernatural and superhuman threats. Katana makes an appearance as the only member of the crew that is not inherently evil in nature to balance out the debauchery and criminal element. David Ayer goes above and beyond to patch up a story that was overshadowed by casting Jared Leto as The Joker due to the negative commentary regarding the decision. In the end, Batman also makes an appearance for continuity’s sake and one can’t help but wonder if it was a bad ploy that backfired since fans were put off by both casting choices. (Affleck is a very good Batman and Bruce Wayne but many people are not supportive of his efforts. #BaleismyBatman4Ever)

In a barage of violence, gun fights and stylized kickassery, the characters embark on a journey of redemption and self discovery. Is Harley Quinn in need of rescue or is she perfectly fine rescuing herself? Can Deadshot earn his daughter’s respect? What is Captain Boomerang carrying around? Will Diablo and Killer Croc fight their demons and own up to their actions? Has Amanda Waller hit the jackpot with the Suicide Squad? All these questions and more will have nerds fighting over the execution and contents of the movie which spans decades of DC Comic lore and graphic novel excerpts. If a character seems out of place or depth there’s a comic book that will explain why. Take the time to peruse the offerings from the DC catalog. There’s a baddie out there willing to steal your heart. Ha Ha Ha
