Falling

I fell into strong arms,
Into mesmerizing brown eyes with a deep stare
Wrapped inside a beautiful smile from which escaped thunderous laughter

I fell for your words
Kind, gentle, true…
Full of wonderful and exciting stories;
barely catching my breath as we ran through the magical places described.

I fell in the lap of an opportunity to be loved and to love in return,
A promise to keep until my dying day!
One entered into willingly and without reservations.

I fell deeply into a heart strong enough to hold my pain and all our fears,
One that had sustained great injury and extensive repair,
One looking to learn, to trust, to heal…

And even when your embrace suffocated me,
when you stared down in judgement,
or when you laughed at my mistakes,
I grew to love you more every day…
Bitter, angry and resentful words wouldn’t deter me:
The promise kept, unyielding.
My heart, broken, never deserted yours,
And on its own volition learned how to defend itself from you.
Neither patience nor understanding was lacking,
Every courtesy was extended,
And it ruined me.

No matter what I do or say I can’t escape your unforgivable cruelty
The way every slight makes the memory of us a heavier burden to carry
One that I must bear until you fall too.
